Judge Cook has been recognized for her work as Administrative Judge of the Summit County Domestic Relations Court (SCDRC):

 

 

 

Judge Katarina Cook was honored to receive the following awards:

 

-Ohio Women’s Bar Association & Women’s Bar Foundation 2026 Government in Action Award

 

-2023 Rev. Dr. Robert A. Denton Outstanding Victim Service Award by the Victim Assistance Program

 

 

 

Programs/Projects that Judge Cook has initiated/created/developed since becoming a Judge in 2009:

 

-July 2026-Planning for SCDRC’s 1st Settlement Week underway! Designed to help parties to resolve their cases faster at no or low cost!

 

- March 2026-SCDRC’s first student art exhibit and award reception in the Court’s waiting area for Children: In Their Best Interest.

 

-2025 & 2026- Legal Aid for Legal Custody Events-SCDRC partnered with Akron Public Schools and Legal Aid providing guidance to caregivers to get legal custody of APS students.   

 

-2025 Ohio State Bar Association grant recipient for the C.A.P.E. (Children & Parents Empowered) Pilot Program- First Domestic Relations Court in Ohio to hire a Certified Child Life Specialist to intervene early in the legal process with a coordinated approach that identifies needs and connects to support parents of children under 1& with special needs. 

 

-2025 & 2026-Awarded a grant from America 250-Ohio partnering with Summit County Historical Society to launch Law or Legend: A Judicial Scavenger Hunt – using an app, designed for children & families to learn about Summit County history & the court system by completing missions. 

 

-2025-Coordinated with Aver Health to provide on-site/same day reduced fee drug & alcohol testing.  

 

-2025-Created the Quiet Space-trauma-informed, sensory-friendly & lactation accessible private space within SCDRC & awarded Akron Bar Foundation grant to furnish the room. 

 

-In 2024 Judge Cook was instrumental in forming the first board for the Summit County Fatherhood Collaborative and is currently Co-Chair.

 

-In 2024 in conjunction with Child Support Enforcement Agency provided on-site genetic (DNA) testing to simplify process for parties bringing their children.  

 

Since 2023, community outreach partnership with Ohio Justice Bus to provide Free Family Law Legal Clinics - 7 events scheduled for 2026! Over 700 people served to date!  

 

-2023-Working Together Program teaching never-married parents skills to cooperate in raising their children was halted in 2020 due to COVID restrictions. Judge Cook directed the creation of a virtual class and added information for caregivers seeking legal custody.  

 

-In 2022-2026 SCDRC awarded STOP VAWA (Violence Against Women Act) grant to hire & specially train a dedicated magistrate to hear domestic and dating violence cases.

 

-In 2022, SCDRC collaboration with Victim Assistance Program to create The Children’s Drop-In Center, for those parents/caregivers that are victims of domestic violence or appearing in court and need on-site childcare. 

 

-In 2021-created & implemented 5 parenting time schedule options & abolished SCDRC’s Standard Order for Visitation-because families are not all the same & 6 overnights a month is not Judge Cook’s standard policy for parenting time. 

 

-2021- Family Recovery Court awarded a $50,000 grant to provide free supervised visitation & therapeutic supervised visitation to participants!  

 

-Judge Cook became the Summit County Domestic Relations Court’s administrative judge in January 2021. 

 

-November 2020-Summit County Domestic Relations Court Judge Cook was re-elected.  

 

-2020-Judge Cook Partnered with Victim Assistance Program to create 3 videos for persons seeking a civil protection or dating violence protection order-initially to address issues of COVID safe distancing and victim advocates inability to speak with victims, and continued as required completion to answer questions in petitions for dating or domestic violence-see SCDRC’s website www.drcourt.org.  

 

-Prior to 2020 parties getting a divorce or dissolution were required to attend an in-person Remember the Children Program. In response to COVID restrictions, Judge Cook directed the creation of a video and remote learning platform making it convenient for parents to complete on their own time.

 

-2019-Summit County Juvenile Court private Legal Custody cases were reassigned to SCDRC & Judge Cook required that a Guardian Ad Litem be appointed to investigate & report on the best interest of the child.  

 

- In November of 2019, Judge Cook created the Family Recovery Court Program, which is a voluntary court program that provides parents a support framework when dealing with the effects of chemical dependency and/or mental health issues. The program celebrated its first graduation ceremony in September of 2021. 

 

-November 2016-Akron Municipal Court Judge Cook was elected to the Summit County Domestic Relations Court.  

 

 -In 2016, together with Judge Jill Flagg Lanzinger of the Barberton Municipal Court, Judge Lisa Coates from the Stow Municipal Court, and the Humane Society of Greater Akron, Judge Cook began offering animal cruelty prevention classes as a sentencing option for defendants convicted of crimes involving animals.   

 

-2013-Judge Cook was re-elected as an Akron Municipal Court Judge.  

 

-While at Akron Municipal Court, in addition to her regular duties, Judge Cook presided over the Drug Court & from June 2012 until December 2016, presided over OVI Court, which received certification as a specialized docket by the Ohio Supreme Court in June 2015

 

-2009-Katarina Cook was elected to the Akron Municipal Court bench.
